The exhibition presents an important collection of Chinese raw and lacquered wooden objects from the Kingdom of Chu (Warring States Period, 475-221 BC). What makes these objects carved in wood so unique, lies in their quality, their variety and the richness of their style. Their extraordinary state of affairs stems from a combination of particularly favorable climatic and archaeological conditions, complemented, after their discovery, by state-of-the-art scientific conservation work.

There are also sculptures discovered in tombs located in rich and fertile regions, with warm and humid climate, belonging to a very particular tradition where shamanism and cults hold a considerable place in everyday life. Ritual objects, everyday or funerary utensils, guardians of tombs or fetish objects, very rare statuettes still clothed in their silk robes are some of the pieces exhibited. They bear witness the wealth and variety of funerary ceremonies of this period. Indeed, the Chu lived and died surrounded “spirits” with whom they were constantly linked. Symbolic and sacred works that embodied the means of reconciling these mysterious powers on their last journey.
