Botticelli was born in Florence, the fourth son of Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, a tanner. His nickname was derived from the one given to his eldest brother Giovanni, who, because of his corpulence, was called “il Botticello”.
In 1481 Botticelli was one of several artists chosen to go to Rome to decorate the walls of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. There he produced “The Youth of Moses”, “The Punishment of Korah”, and “The Temptation of Christ”.
This monograph presents a selection of Botticelli’s paintings and drawings, including extraordinary masterpieces such as the “Mystic Nativity”, “St. Augustine in his Study”, “Pallade and the Centaur”, “Annunciation” and “Madonna and Child”, as well as a selection of works by other Renaissance painters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Piero di Cosimo, Filippo and Filippino Lippi.
