A look at contemporary Chinese art designed by Lina López and Giacomo Rambaldi, celebrating a Chinese national holiday, thirty years after the death of Mao. The exhibition curators brought together 20 of the most prominent Chinese contemporary artists to work on the figure of Mao. The works were exhibited for 3 days.
In a period of intense cultural exchanges between Europe and China (2004: “Year of China”, in France; 2005: “Year of France”, in China; 2006: “Year of China”, in Italy), MAIMAO intended to help Chinese artists’ voices to be heard, establishing a dialogue between them, using the same vector of inspiration: a 80 x 60 cm black and white photo of a sculpture of president Mao Zedong. The choice of this white ceramic sculpture was deliberated; a white canvas offering the artists maximum freedom of interpretation and expression.
The catalog of MAIMAO published by ‘Gli Ori’, was prefaced by Pierre-Jean Rémy (Académie française), general commissioner of the France/China years, and expert Pia Copper (Art Curial).
